Line-Voltage or 120V: Regular household/business voltage in the U.S. directly powered by electrical panel. Transformer: A device designed to transfer energy from one circuit to another by electromagnetic induction. Transformers are typically used to increase (step up) or decrease (step down) the voltage from one circuit to another. The turns ratio, or number of windings on the primary and secondary sides of the transformer, will affect Hardwire: A term to describe when all connectors/plugs are removed from electrical devices in order for them to be connected directly, wire-to-wire. Usually done by certified electrician only. Plug-n-Play: A term that describes a user-friendly and easy to use method of connecting electrical devices through the use of male/female connectors specifically designed for compatible units. Lamp Efficacy: A metric used to compare light output to energy consumption. It is the ratio of lumens per watt. Lamp Life: The number of burning hours at which 50% of any large group of installed lamps are still operational. Illuminance/Lumens: A photometric term which quantifies light striking a surface or plane at a point. It is expressed either in lumens per square foot, footcandles (the English metric) or lumens per square meter, lux (the metric unit). 1 footcandle = 10.76 lux Color Temperatures / Kelvin(k): The measurement or characteristic of the white balance of a light source. Low temperature implies warmer or more yellow/red, moving up the scale to brighter and whiter tones. Measured using a standard unit of color temperature called the Kelvin (k), Beam: The angles at which light emits from a device (bulb or lighting unit) when compared to the distance at which it is designed to illuminate. Measured in “degrees”. ETL: Abbreviation for Electrical Testing Laboratories, an independent organization whose responsibilities include rigorous testing of electrical products. ETL has been particularly active in the testing of fluorescent ballasts and is affiliated with CBM (Certified Ballast Manufacturers). Comparable and as acceptable as UL Listing (see below). U.L.: Abbreviation for Underwriter’s Laboratories, an independent organization whose responsibilities include rigorous testing of electrical products. When products pass these tests, they can be labeled (and advertised) as "UL listed." UL tests for product safety only. |
